Angiography

Angiography is an advanced and highly accurate diagnostic procedure used to examine the blood vessels of the heart, especially the coronary arteries. It is primarily performed to detect any narrowing or blockages that may reduce blood flow to the heart muscle and increase the risk of chest pain or heart attack.

During the procedure, a thin and flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel, usually through the wrist or groin area. Through this catheter, a special contrast dye is injected into the bloodstream. This dye makes the blood vessels visible under X-ray imaging.

As the dye flows through the coronary arteries, a series of real-time X-ray images (called fluoroscopy) are taken. These images clearly show whether the arteries are normal or blocked, and they also help determine the location and severity of the blockage.

Angiography is considered one of the most reliable methods for diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD). It helps cardiologists decide the best treatment plan, which may include medications, angioplasty, or bypass surgery depending on the severity of the condition.

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour. Patients may feel slight pressure during catheter insertion but generally no major pain.

Overall, angiography plays a crucial role in accurately diagnosing heart blockages and guiding life-saving treatment decisions in cardiovascular care.
