TMT (Treadmill Stress Test)

TMT (Treadmill Stress Test)

A TMT (Treadmill Stress Test), also known as a Cardiac Stress Test, is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate how well the heart functions when it is under physical stress. It helps doctors understand how the heart responds to increased workload, which may not always be visible when the body is at rest.

During the test, the patient is made to walk on a treadmill. The speed and incline of the treadmill are gradually increased in stages to make the heart work harder. Throughout the procedure, the patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and ECG (electrocardiogram) are continuously monitored.

The main purpose of the TMT is to detect any reduced blood flow to the heart muscle, which may indicate blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. It is especially useful in diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to chest pain (angina) or even heart attacks. The test can also help evaluate the effectiveness of ongoing heart treatments and assess overall heart fitness.

Doctors closely observe any abnormal changes during the test, such as chest discomfort, unusual ECG patterns, or abnormal rise in blood pressure. If such signs appear, the test may be stopped immediately for safety.

The procedure is generally safe and non-invasive, lasting around 15–30 minutes. Patients are advised to wear comfortable clothing and shoes to walk easily on the treadmill.

Overall, the TMT is an important tool in cardiology for detecting hidden heart problems, especially those related to reduced blood supply to the heart during physical activity.
